ICCS stands for the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study. It is a project of the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement).
The study takes place within the wider context of growing interest and concern with active citizenship and education at international, EU, and national levels. In Ireland, this is reflected in the Report of the Taskforce on Active Citizenship, launched by the Taoiseach in April 2007. The Report recommended Ireland’s participation in ICCS.
The purpose of ICCS is to investigate the ways in which young people are prepared to undertake their current and future roles as citizens. ICCS instruments will collect information on outcomes as well as the contexts in which these outcomes have arisen.
ICCS builds on previous international studies of civic education conducted in 1971 and 1999.
