Recruitment FAQ

How do I apply for a role?

When vacancies arise, we post them on our website. To apply for a role, please follow the steps outlined on the job posting. Note: we do not accept speculative applications.

When will I hear back after applying?

Once the closing date has passed, we will review all applications received. Our recruitment process can take time depending on the volume of applications but we aim to respond to everyone as quickly as possible. Once the process is finalised we will let you know if you are being invited to the next stage of the process.

Can I apply for multiple roles?

You can apply for as many positions as you want. If you see a position, you feel you are suitable for, please follow the application process as described above. Each application is assessed individually. If you are unsure, please contact hr@erc.ie

Is the salary negotiable?

We are informed by public sector pay policy and therefore the salary is not negotiable. The salary scale relevant to the role will be stated in the candidate information booklet.

If you are successful, you will commence on the first point of this scale. The only exception to this rule is if your current (or most recent employer) is also part of the civil service/public sector, in which case you may request the salary you have been offered to be reviewed. The latter exception only applies when your current role in the civil service/public service is relevant to the post you are applying for with the ERC and the job specification are considered analogous.

As part of this salary review process, we will ask you to provide a letter from your current/most recent employer detailing your salary and grade. We will then review this to determine if your experience is analogous and if your salary point should be adjusted.

What happens if I missed the closing date for a role?

All roles are advertised for a minimum of two full weeks. The closing date and time is stated on the job advertisement and is strictly adhered to. Unfortunately, if you want to apply but the closing date has passed, we cannot accept your application. This is to ensure fairness to all candidates.

What happens if I have technical issues and cannot upload my application?

If you experience technical issues when applying for a role you should contact the recruitment team at hr@erc.ie

I have been invited to interview. What can I expect from the process?

Notification of interview date and time will be issued to the candidates at the email address provided in their applications. Candidates should make themselves available on the date(s) specified by the ERC and should make sure that the contact details specified on their application are correct.

The ERC uses a competency-based approach to conducting interviews. The areas you will be assessed on in the interview are listed in the candidate information booklet. When you are invited to interview you will be informed of the composition of the interview panel (please note this is subject to change).

You can find further guidance here: Interview Advice | Advice for Public Service Jobs | publicjobs.ie

The ERC reserves the right to conduct interviews either remotely online or face-to-face as circumstances require, and also to require candidates to attend a second interview and/or complete further assessments or tests as it deems appropriate and necessary following the first interview E.g. presentations or any other tests or exercises that may be deemed appropriate as well as language/communication test (oral and/or written).

Details of any such follow up will be communicated to candidates at least one week in advance.

Can I reschedule the interview?

Candidates should make themselves available at the date and time assigned to them for interviews. Where candidates are unavailable the ERC will try to accommodate by rescheduling the interview. Given the constraints of interview panel and availability of panelists it may not always be possible.

Candidates who do not attend for interview or any other element of the selection process when and where required by the ERC, or who do not, when requested, furnish such evidence as the ERC requires in regard to any matter relevant to their candidature, will have no further claim to consideration.

When will I hear back on the results of an interview?

You will be notified of the result of the process as soon as possible, after all interviews for the position have taken place. If you are offered a role, this offer will be subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks. These checks include references from previous employers and validation of qualifications.  Your employer will not be contacted without your prior approval.

I have been offered a place on a panel. How does this work?

For some competitions, once the highest scoring candidate has been hired, a panel of successful candidates (in order of merit) may be formed. If the same type of vacancy arises within the active duration of the panel, the position will be offered to the candidate who obtains first place on the panel. If they decline, offers will be made in order of merit until the new vacancy is filled. Our panels are typically active for 12 months, up to a maximum of 18 months.
