Seán works as a part-time Research Associate at the Educational Research Centre. He was formerly a Lecturer in Mathematics Education in St. Patrick’s College from 1976 to 2007, and, before that, a mathematics teacher in from 1964 to 1974. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from the University of Connecticut in 1976. He has long and varied experience in the development of standardised tests, national assessments, and international assessments of mathematics achievement and has been involved in the development of successive editions of the Drumcondra Mathematics Tests for primary and post-primary schools for over 40 years. He was a member of the mathematics expert groups associated with Ireland’s National Assessments in 2004 and 2009; the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), 2003; the OECD Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) 2011; and is currently on the TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) Item Review Committee. He also co-authored a successful mathematics textbook series for primary schools in the 1980’s, and has carried out research on the teaching of mathematics in Irish primary and post-primary schools.
