What Information does PISA collect? |

The focus of PISA is on preparedness for life, and on the extent to which students are able to demonstrate skills in real-life, novel contexts. Therefore, the approach taken is somewhat different to more traditional, curriculum-based methods of assessment. As well as information on student reading, mathematics, and science literacy, PISA gathers contextual background information. This helps researchers to interpret and explain student achievement. For example, previous cycles of PISA have found that student performance tends to be better in schools with a positive disciplinary climate. In all participating countries, two types of questionnaires are administered: a Student questionnaire and a School questionnaire. In Ireland, we normally administer an additional teacher questionnaire, for subject teachers of the main assessment domain. Thus, in PISA 2009, teachers of third year English students will be asked to complete a teacher questionnaire. In PISA 2006, a questionnaire was administered to those teaching Junior Certificate science classes, and the resulting report can be downloaded by clicking here.
