PISA 2009 will be the fourth cycle of the PISA study and will be carried out in 66 countries, including Ireland.  In preparation for the PISA 2009 Main Study, a field trial took place in March 2008 with 700 students in 27 schools. During March 2009 it is planned to assess 5,500 15-year-old students in about 160 schools across Ireland.

As in PISA 2000, reading will again be the major focus of the assessment. This allows us to examine students’ achievements across a wider range of reading content areas and processes than in 2003 and 2006. Further, it provides us with the first opportunity to examine in-dept changes and trends in students’ reading achievement since 2000. Students’ reading achievement will be described on an overall scale, on subscales and along proficiency levels as in PISA 2000. In addition to reading, PISA 2009 provides some information about student achievement in mathematics and science.

A new element to the PISA study in this cycle is the Assessment of Electronic Reading. This is an interactive test which assess students’ abilities to read and navigate through electronic texts such as web pages. Approximately 10 students from each participating school will complete this assessment, which will be carried out on school computers.

Students, will also be asked to complete a questionnaire which will gather information about their backgrounds, attitudes to reading, reading strategies, educational and occupational aspirations, and familiarity with Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). In addition, principals of participating schools and teachers of third year English students will be asked to complete short questionnaires.
